Happy Father’s Day to All Dads!

I totally forgot that it’s “Father’s Day” today until my wife presented me with a lovely Father’s Day card early this morning that included this page.  She traced my daughter’s foot and my son’s hand (which he loves!) on this card for me.  I’ve been thinking a lot about the joy and responsibility of being a Father today, especially since I’ve been able to spend the entire day with my family since today is the end of a 2-day holiday (and 4 day weekend!) here in Oman.

One important verse connected to Fatherhood that has been running through my mind today is this one:

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up by training and instructing them about the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4)  Fathers often belittle and abuse their children either physically or emotionally, which can cause their kids to harden their hards, rebel against them and if unchecked will lead to great resentment from their children in later years.  This verse is extremely important in this day and age of dead-beat dads and invisible fathers.  It states that a father is responsible to bring children up in the knowledge of the Lord.  Many back-seat fathers think that it is the mother’s role and responsibility to look after the kids but that is certainly not a biblical concept.  As we see here and in other portions of Scripture, the father is ultimately responsible for the spiritual condition of the family.  Something to think about.

A shout out to all dads out there!  May we always strive to do our best as we seek the well-being of our families.

For those who might have bitter feelings towards their earthly fathers for any number of reasons, a good verse to consider is this one: “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.” (Psalm 27:10)
