007 Agent Masquerading as Muscat “Baiza Bus Driver”

baiza bus

This is a pic of one of the many “Baiza buses” that operate in Muscat (and other cities of Oman).  They are the way to go for cheap transport in the Sultanate of Oman rather than paying the sometimes outrageous fees demanded by taxis.  They are called “baiza buses” after the lower denomination of the Omani rials (like American cents or Indian paisa). You can get transported over long distances in these often overcrowded vans (with mostly Indian, Pakistani, Filipino workers) for only 200-400 baizas (depending on the distance you’re traveling and the condition of the van!).  Anyway, check out the license plate on the back of this baiza bus!close up of 007 baiza bus

Cue the James Bond theme music! 🙂  I wonder if this van is equipped with radar, machine guns, oil slick dispensers, smoke screens, bullet-proof windshield and passenger ejector seats of previous Bond cars!  Just to be safe, I’d keep my distance!

  1. An ironic commentary to the sorry road accident statistics in Oman perhaps?

And BTW…I have not seen anything particularly bad during three days of driving. Are accidents mostly at night and weekends?

    • Good question. I wonder if the stats are avaiable showing what percentage of accidents happen at what time of the day and during which day of the week.

Ah, they remind me of the FX and UV express vans we have here, must be close cousins to your baiza buses…hope the drivers are safer than here, ours can give you a heart attack if you’re not used to driving in Manila.

    • I think the drivers in Oman are equally as crazy as the drivers in Manila. The only difference I see is that Manila drivers have tighter spaces to maneuvre in and therefore (my guess) they seem for the most part quite skilled at driving in tight spaces. I’ve taken such rides in the Philippines and Oman, and it’s the drivers in Oman that have me hanging on for dear life and in constant prayer!

  3. See James, that’s what happens if you let the bad guys blow up your DB5!
